“Lifecycle of A Pomegranate”
This image tells a story. It was created as a visual representation of the underlying theme found in the stories told to me by my fiancé, SGT Eldridge, about his life.
The stories range from eating pomegranates with his grandmother from Lebanon to being sworn into the army 2 days after his 19th birthday, his tours to Afghanistan as a very young adult, and his experience in the army in general.
Lifecycle of A Pomegranate is composed of just two main elements; the pomegranates, representing the man, and the C8, representing the army.
The living fruit is shown in its early stages of growth with one of it’s leaves extending and positioning itself around the trigger of the gun. It’s kind of a fun pose.
On the other side of the image, the innards of the fully matured fruit are showing to the viewer. The barrel of the gun has pierced through the fruit.
Though this moment is captured eternally in the image, the splatter of the pomegranate juice implies movement and an unbalanced exchange; As the barrel enters the fruit, the fruit leaves a splash of juice on the gun.
The impact the fruit has on the gun can easily be wiped away but the impact the gun has had on the fruit cannot be easily reversed. The experience of being pierced by the gun will always show in the pomegranate, even once the gun is removed.
